Should I just give you the goods on this healthy recipe or should I give you the rap on “sugar” first?

“Sugar, it is!”

I agree, sugar is bad for you. Sugar lights up the same centres in your brain that opioids do. Sugar is implicated in Alzheimers, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, inflammation, mood disorders and other lifestyle diseases.

What you may not be aware of is that, natural sugar, that natural occurring substance found in foods, in its natural form, that is, in a fruit, vegetable, plants, dried or fresh, does NOT have the same effects on human physiology that added refined white, denatured, processed, modified, stratified, bleached, synthesized sugar does. Apple juice from concentrate is not the same as eating an apple.

Once again, like many other previously demonized natural foods (eggs, butter, red meat) the glucose, fructose (mono-sacchrides) and sucrose, lactose (disaccharides) naturally occurring in fruits, vegetables, various legumes, dairy and grains is a not a contributor for disease when eaten in whole form and balanced amounts. In fact, you need glucose to fuel the body, especially the brain. The brain consumes the first 120g (420kal) of your daily intake. Hopefully it is from a healthy source. (I know, some Keto dieters may be rolling eyes right now... however, one cannot change human physiology, one can tinker and force it to use fat for energy (when you activate starvation), but the truth remains, the brain’s main energy source is glucose).

Studies performed in the past, tested added sugars in foods, mainly processed juices and soda drinks. These studies showed a strong link between refined sugar consumption and/or mortality and lifestyle diseases.

Okay so why did I deviate into such a long introduction for this smoothie? Because it is loaded with fruit! BUT, in it‘s whole full goodness form, and then some. This smoothie has added protein, fats and fibre that slow glucose release, that is, help balance sugar released into the blood stream and helps you stay satiated longer. I enjoy this smoothie in the summer( especially this rainy season!) and winter(⬅️with added Vitamin D drops, that’s another blog). 💭🤔🤪😇

“...and now bringing you some sunshine on a rainy day...”

Tropical Sunshine Smoothie ☀️

Yield: 3 cups

This ‘balanced act‘ smoothie is not only great brain food, but it is loaded with antioxidants. it provides you healthy fats, like Vitamin E, Omega 3,6, it provides Vitamin C, A, B6, folate; minerals like selenium, potassium, manganese and magnesium. Along with the fruits, the nuts and seeds provide fibre; ginger and turmeric boast anti-inflammatory benefits for brain and neurological health. Pepper (piperin) along with the fats from the nuts, seeds and avocado, help with increasing curcumin absorption. (Whole turmeric, helps address‘ neurological function better and the turmeric (curcumin) powder helps more with inflammation.)

Hi, I would use an unflavoured powder, as the smoothie is wonderful and does not require flavour. The Sun Warrior brand is one and second to that the Vega Brand. Right now I use straight Sachi inchi seed powder, rich in omega 3, protein and fibre. Also, pumpkin seed powder would be a great protein addition. Hope this helps!
